Phase 1 orthodontics, also known as interceptive orthodontics, is a focused treatment aimed to help children enjoy proper development of their oral structures. Could your little one possibly benefit from it? Read on below to learn more about this treatment and some of the indications that your child might need it.
Phase 1 Orthodontics: The Basics
Phase 1 treatment is specifically for children who do not yet have all of their adult teeth. Your child should have their first orthodontic checkup by the time they are 7 years old or so. This will allow your family’s orthodontist to assess the positioning of your child’s oral structures and determine whether treatment is necessary.
Starting orthodontic treatment as soon as possible is important because it can help the jaws to develop properly. This can create room for all of your child’s adult teeth, promote a healthy airway, and reduce (or perhaps eliminate) the need for braces in the future.
Indications for Treatment
Not all orthodontic problems are obvious to the untrained eye. That’s why it is so important to schedule a professional assessment. In addition to visually evaluating your child’s teeth, your orthodontist will also take some X-rays in order to identify any possible issues with the development of the incoming adult teeth.
However, as a parent, you should still keep an eye on your child’s mouth and take note of the following indications that orthodontic treatment might be necessary:
- Your child’s teeth are noticeably crooked.
- There is significant misalignment in your child’s bite. This might be noticeable in the form of a protruding or weak chin (which can indicate an overbite or underbite). Open bites and cross bites are also things you should look out for.
- Your child has speech difficulties.
- Your child finds it difficult to eat certain food textures.
- Your child often breathes through their mouth or experiences apneas (pauses in breathing) during sleep.
- Your child is older than 5 and still sucks their thumb or fingers.
What to Expect with Phase 1 Orthodontics
If your orthodontist determines that your child needs treatment, it may take 9 – 12 months before final results are achieved. In the meantime, you will have to be diligent about making sure your little one keeps up with proper oral hygiene, particularly if they have braces. If they do not have braces, they may have a removable appliance instead. You should do your best to ensure that your child wears their appliance as much as instructed.
Some children (not all) require phase 2 orthodontic treatment a few years following the completion of phase 1. This usually occurs after all of the adult teeth have come in, sometimes in early adolescence or afterward.
Phase 1 orthodontics can set your child up for a lifetime of healthy smiles! To find out if your little one is a candidate for it, speak to a qualified orthodontist.
